Toussaint L'Ouverture was born into slavery in Saint Dominique. Toussaint learned from his father that he was more than a slave and learned to read and write. He admired the writings of the French Enlightenment philosophers, who spoke of individual rights and equality.
The revelotionaires did not want to end slavery but established the "Rights of Man" which included rights to free slaves and mulattos. The plantation owners were furious and the revolutionaries took away the right. The slaves revolted, angered by the betrayal and Toussaint was the leader.
Toussaint L'Overture took these angry slaves and turned them into a n army of his own. They successfully beat the French. The revolutionaries wanted to take the revolution farther so they established equality and Toussaint helped them get rid of the Spanish and British in Haiti. He won 7 battles in 7 days and became the colony's de facto governor.
When Napoleon came in rule of the French, he reinstated slavery, causing Haiti to go to war again. To fix things, Napoleon met with Toussaint and made peace.
Peace!
A few monhs after dclaring peace, the French asked if Toussaint could come to a negotiating meeting. The meeting was a facade and instead the soldiers imprisoned Toussaint under Napoleon's orders.
L'Overture was in horrible conditions and died in the prison. The citizens of Haiti continued to fight for freedom and Napoleon ended up dying imprisoned as well.
