- "I was afraid of someone who looked different too. His name was Torteau."
- "It all started one rainy day, when a man ran into my school yelling that the Nazis were coming for the Jewish kids. He led them into the woods. A teacher who was not even Jewish went with them."
- "I did not want to ruin my new shoes so I went and hid in the bell tower. Later Torteau, a crippled kid who walked with two canes, found me and took me to his house."
- "His father and mother pityed me and willingly cared for me. I had to stay in there barn and I also had to hide inthe haystacks when the Nazis came, but they provided me food and shelter for the next two years."
- "One day Torteau came in and gave me my food. We talked and I started to feel remorse about making fun of him behind his back. Then he kissed me! Later that same day he got captured by Germans and was sent to Auswitchz for being crippled. He was gassed at arrival."
- Before he was sent to Auschwitz I asked him what his real name was. His name was Julian!
