  • Codex Justinianus : A compilation of imperial constitutions (laws) from Hadrian's time onward. Digesta (or Pandectae): An encyclopedia of writings from great Roman jurists like Ulpian and Paulus. Institutiones : An introductory textbook for law students, based on earlier works. Novellae Constitutiones : New laws issued by Justinian after the Codex was completed. As a Textbook The Institutes was explicitly created as a textbook for law schools, but the other parts also functioned as legal texts. It provided a comprehensive and systematic body of law for the empire. Modern editions are used by scholars to study ancient law, property rights, and the development of legal concepts. Key Editions Mommsen/Krueger Edition: A highly influential Latin edition from the late 19th century, often reprinted. Godefroy Edition: An early, influential edition from the 16th century that helped popularize the collective title Corpus Juris Civilis.
