- What a stunning necklace!
- In the year 1880, Paris, France. A young middle-class woman fantasizes about a life far beyond her means. Her husband returns home one day with tickets to a very affluent party, and she is excited to attend but concerned that she will appear dowdy.
- CLIMAX
- Mathilde Loisel is not wealthy, but she wishes she was. Her husband gives her money to buy a dress, but she is not satisfied until she borrows a necklace from a wealthy friend.
- FALLING ACTION
- My life has been horrible because of that necklace I borrowed 10 years ago....
- At the ball, Mme. Loisel is a hit, but the necklace goes missing. After days of searching, she and her husband decide to replace it with one that looks identical. The replacement costs more money than they make, and it takes them ten years to pay it off.
- RESOLUTION
- Oh, dear! My friend, that necklace was false!
- After ten years of hard work and struggles, the couple pays off all their debts.
- Mathilde is walking to the market one day when she sees the friend from whom she borrowed the necklace. She makes the decision to tell her what happened.
- Mme friend .'s Forestier informs Mathilde that the necklace was false, or a forgery. The reader is left to ponder the situation's irony.
