  • We establish that Mr. Rainsford is a hunter and he is on a boat to the amazon to hunt jaguars. He chats with Whitney about the island nearby that is making the crew nervous. The island is nicknamed the ship trap

  • He wakes up in the afternoon and sees where he believes the gun was shot and then searches the island for any signs of people. He finds a house and asks to be let in and is brought inside by a man named general Zaroff. He gives him clean clothes and lets Mr. Rainsford eat dinner with him. The general says that he is a hunter too but has grown bored of the game he hunted and that he found new game.
  • Resolution
  • General Zarrof explains that he lures and traps people on the island and then hunts and kills them. He treats it like a game that can only be won if the victim doesn't get caught in three days. Mr. Rainsford calls him a murderer, refuses to hunt other people with him, but demands to be hunted so he can get off the island.
  • Mr. Rainsford demands to hunt, and general Zarrof gives in, he begins running a winding trail confident he will not be found. By morning the general has caught up but he leaves so he can continue hunting him. Rainsford sets up traps in attempts to kill the general but only ends up hurting his shoulder. After nearly three days he has won, avoiding getting caught by jumping into the ocean.
  • The general went home and ate dinner but when he went to his room Mr. Rainsford was waiting for him. The general admitted defeat and said that Rainsford would be sent to a town in the morning. Rainsford said he wasn't finished so the general agreed to a duel whoever won would get to sleep in a nice bed and whoever lost would be fed to the dogs. Rainsford says that he had never slept in a better bed.
