- Charlie Gordon, a 37 year old man, with an IQ of 68, attends Miss Kinnian's school for adults. He is determined to learn all he can and become a genius. With his low IQ, he is held back, but his determination never falters.
- Climax
- His good attitude and determination to learn mean that he is chosen for an operation to increase his intelligence threefold. He undergoes the operation under the guidance of Dr. Strauss, who watches over Charlie's progress before and after the operation.
- Falling Action
- As his intelligence increases, he races a mouse who underwent the same operation by seeing who can solve a maze faster. They race often, and Charlie hates the mouse, Algernon, more and more as he gets beat. Then one day, he wins, and befriends Algernon.
- Resolution
- Algernon, the mouse Charlie loved, the mouse who underwent the same operation as Charlie, loses his intelligence and dies days later. Charlie mourns the loss of his friend, and has the revelation that he will soon regress in his intelligence until he was as he was before, or worse.
- As he comes to turn with his regression, he stays in his apartment and turns away visitors, miserable. He tries with all he has to hold on to some of his knowledge and intelligence, to no avail.
- Having regressed completely, Charlie leaves the city, seeking a place to start over, somewhere where nobody knows that he was once a genius.
