- The Bittering family lands on Mars. They realize that they are stranded on Mars and can never go back to Earth. Mr Bittering felt that there was something worng and there was, they were changing into Martians!

- The author emphasizes that the humans and the plants are changing. The theme of the short story is that your environment changes your identity.

- On page 469 it says, " 'Sam, your eyes, ' .... 'They're kind of yellow colored,' ... 'And your taller and thinner,' ... 'What color eyes have you got Harry?' 'My eyes, well they're blue of course.' ". This setting of Mars supports the theme that your environment changes you identity because Mars is causing the people and the planet to change.

- Well, your eyes are yellow too. And you look tanner than usual.
- On page 473 it says, “In the flow of days and weeks, the rocket receded and dwindled. The old fever was gone. It frightened him to think he had let it slip this way. But somehow the heat, the air, the working conditions…”. The quote shows that Harry is turning into a Martian and he doesn't even realize it because he is not feeling like building the rocket anymore. The characters help support the theme because they are the ones actually going through the change.
- On page 471 it says, “He saw their skin baking brown. And he saw the yellow eyes of his wife and his children, their eyes that were never yellow before. A few tremblings shook him, but were carried off in waves of pleasant heat as he lay in the sun. He was too tired to be afraid.”. The conflict is what is showing and supporting the theme. The conflict is that the people are changing into Martians. The theme is that your environment (Mars) changes your identity (into Martians).
