- Cherry Bloom is a very rich woman that seemingly has everything. The only thing she doesn't have... is happiness. One day, her servants Forrest Jones and Victoria Hodge find her crying in the sitting room.
- What is wrong Ms. Bloom? Is there anything you need?
-
- Ms. Bloom, are you alight!?
- I have all of this money and social status, but I don't feel happy. I don't know why... I feel that there is something missing, but I can't figure out what. I enjoy myself for short amounts of time when I am spending my money, but the feeling never stays.
- Why if I am enjoying myself do I not stay happy?
- Well Ms. Bloom, wealth does not necessarily bring happiness. It can bring enjoyment, sure, but there is a big difference between enjoyment and happiness. Enjoyment has to do with material things and is very short-lived, but happiness is found within you.
- Even if all of our materialistic desires are satisfied, we will still remain unhappy because there will be a feeling that something is missing.
- I just don't understand how it's possible for me to be so unhappy when I have so much money?
- They don't brag, and they share what they have, even if they don't have much.
- Well you see, money only brings enjoyment and not happiness. The people that are happy are actually those that do not care for material things and are satisfied with what they have.
- What? I still don't understand how they can be truly happy if they are poor.
- Do you know what makes up the rest of our happiness? Nothing other than genetics and our intentional activity - the things that we do and think, the things we can control. So you can see that money and status only play a small part in our happiness. Instead, we have the power to control how happy we are through our actions and mindset. As Abraham Lincoln said, "People are just as happy as they make up their minds to be."
- Well Miss Bloom, in life there are factors that determine our happiness. Our life circumstances - which include our financial and social status - makes up only 10% of our happiness!
