  • In Mecca around the year 1300, you could have seen Turkish, Malian and even Indian people from different continents gathered for a pilgrimage. Without something like religion, these people might not have ever met—and perhaps not as peacefully.
  • Your Royal Highness, the subjects are not responding well to your new laws.
  • Religion also gave rulers a way to strengthen a fragile society. If laws were said to be ordained by gods, they could not be contested. This ensured that subjects could be controlled and stability could endure.
  • Tell them the laws were ordained, not by me, but by our God.
  • Religion also played an important role during the Neolithic Revolution. Farmers may have wished to possess absolute control over their plants and animals, but were unable to do so. As a result, many turned to religion and gods to bless them with a good harvest, plentiful rain, and more.

  • Religion truly gave societies unity, stability, and a sense of assurance.
  • And to make sure the Empire State Building project went well, the company probably had to find some way to make everyone believe in a cause.
