Storyboard Text

  • Jerry is on vacation at the beach! He is on summer vacation and is out of school for the next two months. However, Jerry does not want to forget everything he learned in math class prior to coming here. Throughout his vacation, Jerry keeps up with his math skills by solving problems he sees on an every day basis.
  • How far away is that coconut?
  • Jerry wants to find the distance between his eye and the coconut. The distance between him and the tree is 10 feet. The angle from the tree to Jerry's eye level is 5°. To find the distance from him to the coconut, Jerry can use the Sin formula of opposite over hypotenuse. Using this formula, Jerry gets Sin 5° = 10/x. This would equal to x = 10/Sin(5°). The distance from the tree to Jerry's eye line is 114.74.

  • After getting his coconut, Jerry decided to head to the other side of the beach to build sandcastles and go surfing.

  • Jerry built an extremely large sand castle. He wants to figure out how tall the sand castle is. The distance between him and the castle is 13 ft and the angle that is created nearest to him is 26°. The formula of Tan = opposite/adjacent can be used here. This formula would be applied as 13Tan(26) = x. The sand castle is 6.34 feet tall.

  • After a while, Jerry decided to go surfing. While surfing he realized that he didn't know the angle of the wave he was surfing. He knew that the height of the wave had to be about 8 ft, and the length of the wave had to be around 12 feet. To find this angle, the inverse of Tan can be taken as Tan -1 = 8/12. The angle of this wave is 33.69°.

  • After a long day of grabbing coconuts, building sand castles, surfing, and solving math problems, Jerry is tired and is ready to go home!
