Me: Hmm those sound great. We eat food together. That's not interesting enough to share.
Good morning class. Today I wanted to share a really special story with you. In the winter time people celebrate different holidays in many ways. Your family might have traditions you do every year to celebrate. Does anyone know a tradition they do with their family?
My family goes on a vacation every winter. This year we are going to Hawaii!
My family and I dress up in pajamas and watch movies all day on Christmas after we open presents!
A 2nd grade pre-read discussion about holiday traditions and customs.
Me: Did he just say tamales?!?!? That's my favorite thing about Christmas!
Thank you so much for all your sharing. Well this story is very special to me because it is a tradition my family does and I wonder if anyone in the class does this too. The story we are reading is Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto.
Tamales?
Me: I have! I love tamales! They are my favorite food ever. We only get to have them around Christmas because my mom says they are a lot of work to make. My grandma's tamales are the best! She used to sell tamales in Mexico.
Has anyone in our class ever had tamales before? They are a traditional Mexican food eaten at Christmas time.
Me: Uhhh sure. Well, all my girl cousins, and tias, and mom get together and work on making them for Christmas Eve. My favorite are the green salsa ones with chicken. We have to fill the leaves with masa and then salsa and chicken. Then you wrap them like a present and cook them in a big pot. When they're done cooking unwrap it
That's wonderful, Lety. Thank you so much for sharing with our class. They are my favorite too. Do you wanna share more about them?
You wrap them in a leaf?
Me: Well I don't really know what it actually is called but my mom calls it an hoja which I think means leaf.
Tamales are wrapped in the husk of corn. Kind of like when you barbecue corn you need to take the green part off. Well that's what is used to wrap tamales. There are tamales of all different flavors, even sweet ones!
Me: This is the first time I hear about tamales at school. I wonder what the rest of the story is gonna be like!
I don't like spicy food but I love dessert! I wanna try one. Does the book have sweet ones?
That sounds so good! I love corn! I help my dad when we are barbecuing!
Oh, yeah I know what those leaves are. I didn't know you could use them for stuff! Maybe the book is gonna show how they use the leaves!
I'm glad you're all excited now to read the story. Thank you again, Lety for sharing that with us!
