- The Colonel and Stanhope decide that Osborne and Raleigh will make the attack, with the goal to get a German to interrogate.
- Perfect lets see if they are capable of getting a German.
- We are going to send Osborne and Raleigh for the mission
- After the attack, it is known that Osborne is killed by a hand-grenade and six men are killed by gunshots.
- The two attack with about ten men, shells go off all around, and after a couple of minutes a German is hurried out by the Sergeant Major. He is interrogated by the colonel in poor German.
- Wie heißen Sie?
- "Get out of here, for God’s sake.”
- Later in the evening, they all celebrate the attack with a lot of laughter. As Stanhope gets more drunk, he becomes very angry, especially when the war is brought up. When Hibbert jokingly tells Stanhope to go to bed, Stanhope shouts.
- He gets angry at Raleigh next as he didn’t turn up to the celebration. This is furthered when Raleigh becomes upset because of Osborne’s death. Stanhope sends Raleigh to his dug-out because he is also upset and has been hiding his feelings.
- “For God’s sake forget that bloody raid.”
- it is dark and there are no candles burning. Hibbert’s fears resurface and he is unwilling to leave the dugout but with encouragement from Stanhope and Mason, he leaves to fight.
