Massachusetts was part of the New England (north) region of colonies along with Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The main parts of the economy were Subsistence (small family) farming, Fishing, Whaling, and Ship Building. The main religious group were the Puritans. (Theocratic in some cases)
Behind that fence is the Ohio River Valley. The French and British fought a war known as the French and Indian War over that land and land west of the Appalachian Mountains. The French were expanding southward from Canada, and the British responded by making fort Necessity (Governor Dinwiddie) in The Ohio River Valley. The French then attacked, starting the war. There were many reasons on both sides to fight in the war. The main reasons for the British were to add land and establish things like self government and freedom of religion. The main French reasons to fight were to gain land and expand their fishing/furring industry.
The French were winning the war in the beginning, but the battle of Quebec was a final major turning point, the British coming out victorious, and soon winning the war. After the war, the British gained control of Canada in what was known as the Treaty of Paris (signed in 1763 and ended the war). The only catch for the British was that they were in lots of debt from the war. The British colonists also were angered because the Treaty of Paris restricted westward expansion west of the Mississippi River.
