One of the main themes in Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is Fear and Suspicion can kill. Firstly, according to Narrator, "The people pick this up. Now their murmuring becomes a loud chant filling the air with accusations and demands for action. Two men pass Don and head toward Goodman who backs away backing into his car. He is now at bay." (Page 76). This shows that people are ready to kill Goodman on suspicion. Secondly, Charlie asks Steve "what kind of 'radio set' you working on? I've never seen it, Neither has anyone else. Who talks to you on that 'radio set'? And who do you talks to you?" This quote from the text supports the theme because Charlie gets angry at Steve for no reason and get suspicious but Charlie didn't know what type of radio it was.Finally, according to the narrator, Charlie grabs a shotgun from Steve and uses it to shot Pete Van Horn.(Page 82) This shows that fear can kill because Charlie was scared of Pete Van Horn because he thought Pete Van Horn was a Monster.
