  • As soon as Jude and her mother came to Mallard, Jude wanted to leave as soon as she could. So when she got a scholarship to go to UCLA, she states, “They both knew that she couldn’t. She’d already accepted the track scholarship from UCLA— as if she could even think about turning it down— and now she was standing in front of the bus, waiting to climb on (Bennett 83). She has been dreaming about leaving Mallard ever since she got there, so when she got the chance to leave she took it. She never wanted to live in Mallard, so going to California was her ticket out.
  • Where have they been/ where are they going?
  • Bye mom
  • Your skin is beautiful
  • Since she was little she has been bullied and that plays a part in her self-confidence now that she is older, she explains, “She hated to be called beautiful. It was the type of thing people only said because they felt they ought to” (Bennett 107). She does not believe when people compliment her because of how she was treated when she was younger. She thinks that people are just pitying her because of her skin tone.
  • What do they like/ dislike?
  • What is something the character cannot do?
  • Stella
  • After Jude saw Stella at the party, she is not able to stop thinking about her, she explains, “For years, Stella drifted through her dreams. Stella draped in mink, Stella perched on a ledge, Stella shrugging, smiling, slipping in and out of doors. Always Stella, never her mother, as if even asleep, she could tell the difference” (Bennett 210). Jude knows the difference between her mother and Stella, so she knows when she is either looking at her mother or at Stella. She cannot get Stella out of her head, she wants to tell her mom that she saw her, but she does not want to give her mom false hope.
