- After Jude told Kennedy the truth about who she is, Kennedy has seen her a few times, but this time she was on stage doing a play and she messed up her lines because she saw Jude, Kennedy says, “She blamed Jude. She blamed her for it all” (Bennett 271). Kennedy blames Jude for everything that is happening to her. After Jude tells her that she is part Black, Kennedy sees her life differently.

- When Jude was younger, her classmate would call her different names talking about her skin tone, she says, ”Midnight. Darky. Mudpie. Said, Smile we can’t see you. Said, You so dark you blend into the chalkboard” (Bennett 83). Jude is a skinny dark skinned girl with dark curly hair, she does not look like the other kids in Mallard, and that makes her stand out. Jude is a lot darker than everyone in Mallard, and her classmates would make fun of her because her skin was so dark.
