- Quentin Jacobsen and Margo Roth Spiegleman, two neighbors, found a dead man near their houses when they were nine years old. This scared them, but brought to light Margo's love for mysteries.

- Nine years after they found the dead man, Margo climbs into Quentin's window and asks for his help on an all night adventure. Together, they get revenge on people at their school and travel across their town on a spontaneous journey; a night that Quentin will remember forever.
- "Basically," she said, "this is going to be the best night of your life" (30).

- Quentin realizes that Margo isn't at school the day after their adventure. He comes to the conclusion that she ran away, and that he is meant to find her.
- Using clues that Margo left, Quentin searches for her and any hint as to where she might be. With some help from his friends, he tries his very hardest to uncover the mystery and find his lost friend.

- "I don't know who she is anymore, or who she was, but I need to find her" (141).

- When Quentin finds a major clue about Margo's location, he convinces his three friends to skip their senior graduation and, instead, embark on a 21 hour journey to find her. They are rushed for time, as they know she is planning to move locations. Together, the four friends get closer to solving the mystery of Margo.
- During the road trip, Quentin is worried that he will never be able to find Margo. When they arrive, Quentin desperately rushes to find his mysterious friend and to see if she is alright...
