Storyboard Text

  • King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette had lots of money and power in France. The clergy and the nobles (in the first and second Estate) also had lots of money and power.
  • The Third Estate was made up of the Bourgeoisie, Sans-culottes and peasants they had very little money, no land, and no power. They made up 97% of the population. In June 20, the national assembly was formed at a tennis court. Many people thought life would improve.
  • 1788 was a bad year for weather. It had a hail storm, destroying all crops over France, then the coldest winter of the French Time, everything froze, then there was no rain at all for the crops to grow finally it rained a lot and flooded the empty lands
  • This meant that many of the third Estate began to starve because the there were only bread and no crops and bread prices increasesThere were rumours that the First and Second Estate were hoarding bread too. This made people very angry.
  • On 5th October 1788, women gathered to protest against the shortage of bread, 1000 are marching with pikes to storm the Palace. The King agreed to sign the letter but it was too late.
  • This led to the castle being intruded and robed by all the poor people and the rich ones suffering or even worse dying.
