  • The Baby Boomer generation is one of the largest population groups in the United States. The 65 and older group is expected to make up 18% by of the population by 2030 (Rock Health, 2020).This age group will continue to become active consumers of traditional healthcare and digital health.
  •
  • Rock Health (2020) states that 78% of Baby Boomers access health information through technology, but 20% of people aged 65 and older download medical related smartphone applications. This population demonstrates a clear reluctance in the utilization of these applications. It is a misconception that the elderly population are not active stakeholders in digital health resources, so they are not educated in the benefits of these applications and feasibility of use.
  •
  • While it is imperative to ensure that Baby Boomers are included in the digital health revolution, it is equally significant to design health applications with a user interface that promotes usability and adherence.PRO questionnaire applications are crucial to providing clinicians information on patients’ health outcomes. While this data is needed to deliver quality care, PROs are often underused. A study by Wesley et al. (2019) sought to learn why PROS are most often met with resistance from the elderly population.
  • A study by Wesley et al. (2019) sought to learn why PROS are most often met with resistance from the elderly population. Theyfound that this population felt that most PRO applications were complicated and not-user friendly. XYZ Medical Center will implement a new PRO design that will promote PRO adherence in Baby Boomers while focusing on one of the most important usability factors: simplicity (Usability.gov, 2020).
  • The new simple PRO interface will include the following:Consistency: common language and format throughoutBold and colorful textLow complexity: only one question on the touch screen at a timeEase of navigation: the next question prompt automatically upon answering with an available back buttonConvenience: application is available on all smartphone devicesCommunication: application automatically and safely links to MyChart
  • I Feel Healthy Today- Yes- No
  • Clinical staff will educate patients on the PRO application during a clinical visit. They will be shown how to download the application and walk-through example questions with a demonstration iPad. The patients will be sent home with patient instructions they can refer to and they will be encouraged to call the clinic if they have any questions. PRO questionnaire compliance within the Baby Boomer population will be analyzed in the near future to see with the expectation that adherence will greatly improve.
  • Wow, it's that easy?
