In 1519, Pineda went out to go map the Gulf of Mexico's coast. He became the first European to go see the coast. The mission was not finished and even some of his men were arrested by Hernan Cortes.
Coronado
In 1519, Cortes went to Mexico. When he got there, the Aztecs viewed them as gods with all their supplies. With the Aztecs' enemies, they were taken down and it was made mainland for Spain's operations. Aztecs' also had lots of gold and silver, which made Spain rich.
La Salle

In 1526, Cabeza de Vaca explored Florida. He then got lost and tried to head to Mexico in 1528. After a hurricane, Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked on Galveston Island. The Karankawas took care of them/gave them food and shelter. Many people died on the way in those conditions, but he lived to tell about the city of gold.
In 1541, Coronado went to Texas. He searched up and down for the city of gold, but found none anywhere he went. He and his men then became the first Europeans to discover the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River.
Why can't I find gold?!
In 1685, La Salle arrived in Texas. He was already famous for exploring the Mississippi River. La Salle arrived at Matagorda Bay instead of the Mississippi River. He built a fort and tried to be friendly with the Indians there. That didn't work out, and when he left to get supplies, the fort was attacked. La Salle left for French Canada and was killed by his men.
