- What actions do they take?Stella constantly lies and makes up stories to hide real her so that people don't know who she really is, this affects her relationships with others, "She'd created a new life with a man who could never know her, but how could she walk away from it now? It was the only life she had left" (Bennett 221)

- What actions do they take?As Stella continues to keep her facade up, she takes actions where she is supposedly seen as white. She does this as a way to make others believe that she is truly white,“When she found one stuck in the windshield of her car, she was startled to see her own words reflected back to her, as foreign as if they’d come from a stranger” (Bennett 165). Stella is hiding the fact that she is black by taking actions that will make her seem more white

- What does Stella think about?Stella often thinks about how since who whole life is a life, her own daughter wasn't truly her's, “Kennedy felt like a daughter who belonged to someone else, a child Stella was borrowing while she loaned a life that never should have been hers” (Bennett 170). She thinks this way because this new life that she had built feels as if that she had taken it from someone else. She feels that she doesn't deserve this life
