- You have a very small house, why is that?
- Here in the south, there are either poor people or rich people, I am a slave so I am at the very bottom of the social pyramid.
- Hello, welcome to my home.
- The cotton gin is a machine that separates the cotton seeds from the cotton, it makes work a lot easier because it is difficult to separate the seeds by hand. It was invented to try to lower the amount of slaves, but it sadly caused more plantations because cotton was easier to produce.
- Here in the south, our economy relies on farming and sadly, slavery
- We grow tobacco, indigo, rice, and sugar; but cotton is the most popular because of the invention of the cotton gin.
- Oh, that is interesting. What plants do you grow?
- What is the cotton gin?
- Interesting, it looks like some of the capital buildings in the north, speaking of which, what are the politics like here?
- Well, unlike in the north, most people favor slavery because our economy relies on it. Some slaves try to run away to free states so now plantation owners are putting out rewards for runaway or fugitive slaves.
- This is the plantation house.
