  • Women's RightsSuffragettes had been organizing, picketing, and protesting for women's right to vote for quite a while at this point. Currently Carrie Chapman Catt led the incredible number of suffragettes belonging to the National American Woman Suffrage Association. More recently they had been taking a state by state approach. Mixed with the use of war time sentiments of unity and democracy brought their cause to fruition. President Woodrow Wilson gave into popular demand and in 1919 congress passed the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.
  • ProhibitionProhibitionists sought to ban alcohol for a few reasons. Such as alcohol causing people to act immoral (religious), or causing domestic violence (often championed by women). So prohibitionists organized themselves, spread awareness of their cause, and began to turn states to their cause one by one. By 1917 19 states had banned alcohol. Prohibitionists used the war time ideas of bettering democracy, distaste for German names, and the need for food being more important than the need for alcohol. Public opinion was in their favor so congress passed the 18th amendment which banded manufacturing, transporting, and selling alcohol.
