- The secret gardenChapter One: Little Miss mary
- Mary was a little girl born in India, nobody semeed to care about her, not even her parents, so Kamala, an Indian woman, was paid to take care of her. Mary wasn't pretty, she had a thin angry face and thing blonde hair, and was a little brat, she was selfish and disagreeable, in fact, she only thought about herself.
- One morning, when she was a round nine, whe woke up to find another servant, that wasn't Kamala by her bedside.'What are you doing here?' she asked angrily.The woman responded nervously explaining that Kamala couldn't come
- Something strange was happening that day, many servants were missing and people looked frightened, unbeknownst to Mary, there was a plague running rampant in the town, killing its populace

- Yet, nobody told Mary anything, and nobody came for her, so she went out to the garden and played, pretending that she was making her own flower garden. She understood that there was something wrong after seeing her worried mom rushing into the house together with another young man, she became aware of all the people dying due to the disease. But unbekwnosntt to her, the disease also killed her parents.
- Mary wondered why nobody was coming to serve her, she found all the silence strange, she then heard the voices of two men in the hall, talking about how sad the situation was. When they entred her room they were surprised to find her, and explained her all that had happened, that way Mary found out that her parents were dead and that she had been forgotten. Even then, she only thought about herself and didn't miss her parents that much
- All throught the day and night people ran in and out of the house, screaming and yelling. Mary hid in her bedroom, afraid of all the noises.When she woke up the next day, the house was silent and she thought that everything was fine again and that the disease had passed. But in reality everyone in the house had succumbed to the disease, even her parents.

- Mary was taken to an english family that had known her parents, but she didn'r like them, or their house, or their children. One day, she was playing her favourite game, pretending she was making a garden. One of the family's children came, and offered her help.
- Mary yelled at him, telling him to go away. The kid, named Basil, looked angry at first, but tehn began to laugh at Mary, saying telling her that soon she would be taken to live in another place with her uncle Mr. Archibald Craven.
- Mary was taken to London, after a long sea journey she was me by Mrs. Medlock, her uncle´s housekeeper. Mrs. Medlock talked to Mary and explained many things about her uncle and his house, Mary, being the little bart she was, didn't care at all and spoke rudely to Mrs. Medlock. Only when the woman mentioned Mr. Craven's deseased wife Mary seemed to show some semblance of interest for someone else that wasn't herself.
- After a while Mary started to hear a sound that resulted strange to her and asked Mrs. Medlock what it was, 'It is the sound the wind makes when blowing across the moor'. Mary still confused asked her what is a moor, 'It is just miles of wild land and nothing more, your uncle's house is on the edge of the moor' Mrs. Medlock explained. Mary listened to the frightening sound, she didn't like. She looked more disagreeable than ever.
