  • Let's use a direct democracy!

  • Today we will be voting on...
  • Direct democracy was first invented in ancient Greece. The Greek people are the first known to use direct democracy in their government. The first direct democracy was used in Athens.
  • The ancient Greek's democracy was very different from a monarchy. In monarchies, (1) there is a single ruler, (2) that ruler makes all decisions for the country, and (3) the citizens did not have a say in the government.
  • In ancient Greece, every year a random 500 citizens were chosen to be in the government. The citizens had to attend an assembly every time a law was being passed so they could vote on it. It was required for them to vote; if they did not they would be fined.
  • Thank you so much for your time!
  • In the Greek direct democracy, only free adult men were considered citizens and were able to vote. Women, children and slaves were not considered citizens and were unable to vote on anything.
  • The USA and ancient Greece both have a democracy, but the US is representative instead of direct. In the USA, the citizens (which is all adult persons) vote for who they want to make the decisions instead of voting themselves.
  • I voted!
