  • Polk tried to buy California and New Mexico by sending diplomat John Slidell to Mexico, but Mexico refused to even meet him. Frustrated, Polk sent U.S. troops into the disputed border area to make Mexico respond to them. On April 25, 1846, Mexican troops fired on American soldiers. Polk declared that Mexico had shed American blood on American soil, and Congress declared war.
