  • Overproduction
  • Variation
  • Environment
  • When the deer produce too many offspring, some of the babies get eaten by predators at a young age and don't survive long enough to reproduce. Or, they may also die because there isn't enough food for all of the population.
  • Struggle
  • There are two variations of deer. One type of deer has short legs, and the other one has long legs. Nature will select for one of these variations and against the other.
  • Selection
  • Wolves live in the same environment as the deer. The deer have to be alert at all times so they can avoid getting eaten to help keep their population high.
  • Differential Reproduction
  • The deer face a lot of struggles every day. Some of these include competing with one another for food, shelter, and mates. They also struggle with making sure they don't get eaten so they can stay alive.
  • The long and short leg variations are selected for or against by nature. In this case, nature will select for the long-leg variation and against the short-leg variation. This is because long legs allow deer to be faster so they can escape predators and get prey. The deer with short legs aren't able to outrun their predators, which results in them being eaten.
  • Over time, the population of deer with long legs will increase until they take up most of the deer population. This is because the short-leg deer won't live long enough to reproduce and pass the short-leg trait down to their offspring. They won't be able to live long because they are more likely to be eaten since they aren't able to escape their predators. The deer with long legs will live long enough to reproduce and pass down that trait.
