Storyboard Text

  • In 1946 Eugene Talmadge died before entering the governor's office for his fourth term. He may have been the worst governor Georgia has ever had. He supported white primaries and tried to uphold segregation between African-Americans and White-Americans. White primaries limited the suffrage of African-Americans a lot.
  • When Talmadge died, three people claimed the governor's spot. and those three people were.Herman Talmadge (Eugene Talmadge's son)Ellis Arnall (The governor during 1946 election)Melvin Thompson (Lieutenant governor)
  • Because of the disagreement on who should be governor, Ellis Arnall refused to leave office until the next governor was properly sworn into office.
  • Herman suggested that the Georgia General Assembly choose from the three Gubernatorial candidates through voting. Herman was a few votes short of winning, But they found an extra box of votes that were not counted for Herman. This put Herman ahead of Melvin, so Herman got the governor's spot for a while. Melvin and Arnall were not happy about it though.
  • Melvin started legal proceedings and appealed to the Georgia supreme court. The Georgia supreme court said that the General assembly violated the state constitution by electing Talmadge as governor and that Melvin should take the governor's position until a special election could be held next year
  • Melvin Held the governor's position until the next year when a special election was held and Herman Talmadge won the governor spot.
