  • OTHELLO
  • An external conflict Desdemona faces is when she got struck by Othello for a reason she knows nothing of. Desdemona is a native, and she has no idea why Othello despises her. Othello slapped her because he believes she is having an affair with him. Desdemona is slapped by Othello because she refuses to acknowledge being disloyal to him, and he is becoming increasingly irritated. Overhearing Desdemona's love remarks toward Cassio enrages Othello, who attacks Desdemona. Desdemona is baffled as to why her husband would strike her, especially in public, when she has done nothing to deserve it. Cassio becomes infuriated by Desdemona's loving sentiments and aggressively slaps her.

  • Devil!
  • Oh, my
  • I have not deserved this.
  • DESDEMONA
  • IAGO
  • I heard him saying, “Sweet Desdemona, let’s be careful and hide our love,” in his sleep. And then he grabbed my hand and said, “Oh, my darling!” and I heard him saying, “Sweet Desdemona, let’s be careful and hide our love,” in his sleep. And then he grabbed my hand and said, “Oh, my darling!”
  • No, it was just a dream.
  • But it shows that something has alreadyhappened.
  • Oh, that’s monstrous! Monstrous!
  • The handkerchief!
  • The hand-kerchief!
  • He’s counted on your friendship for his success. He’s shared dangers with you—
  • Really, I don’t think you’re behaving very well.
  • Come on. You know you’ll never find a more capable man.
  • The internal conflict of (character vs self) in Othello is one of the play's primary conflicts. The protagonist, Othello, suffers internal issues as a result of the discovery of the handkerchief, which leads to suspicions that his wife, Desdemona, is sleeping with his lieutenant Cassio. Because of the lies and truth manipulation that Lago gives him, Othello gets increasingly envious. He hung on every word Iago said, to the point where he promoted him to lieutenant and plotted to assassinate Desdemona because of her affair with Cassio, as Iago told him. He was duped into not hating Desdemona and Cassio by lying to him. He also assigned Iago to assassinate Cassio, illustrating Othello's psychotic behavior through the news Iago delivers. And this pulls him away from his love for Desdemona.
  • Desdemona's conflict is her determination and desperation to restore Cassio and Othello's relationship to its former glory. She keeps encouraging Othello to rescue Cassio, but she cares so much about Cassio that she ends up becoming the victim of Othello's rage and cruelty. She doesn't understand why Othello assaults her because she knows she's always been devoted and wouldn't betray him for anything. So it surprises and concerns her to watch Othello become enraged and begin to treat her badly. She's coping with character vs. self, an internal conflict in which she's trying to figure out why Othello, her calm and loving husband, is treating her so differently than he usually does when she knows she's done things to harm him or shatter their relationship.
