Storyboard Text

  • Kino and his family walk to the shop.
  • The pearl is examined. But a bad value?
  • Oh... This pearl is fool's gold. It's too large, who would buy it? There is no place for this in the market. But, I could offer you 1,000 pesos?
  • Kino is upset, so three more people are called in.
  • Don't blame me! Let's ask the others, I'll call them over. Let us ask their opinion. They will tell the same thing. There is no collusion here boy.
  • Kino and his family, dressed in their best clothes, walk to the pearl shop. The whole village accompanies them, wanting to know how this day will turn out for the family. Everyone can sense the importance of today.
  • The bad value is confirmed and Kino leaves angrily.
  • I am cheated! My pearl is not for sale here. I will go perhaps even to the capital!
  • The pearl dealer gives a friendly welcome to Kino, but his intentions are different. The Pearl is examined, but apparently, it's fool's gold, there is no place for it in the market. Out of "sympathy", the pearl dealer offers 1.000 pesos.
  • Kino broods. His brother worries for him.
  • I have to go soon. And I will. I have nothing to fear except starvation.
  • Let us destroy the pearl before it destroys us! Let us crush it between two stones...It's evil, evil!
  • Kino is angered and feeling threatened, he knows that his pearl is worth far more. The rest of the village behind him grumble in agreement. The dealer is afraid, but reverts to "Plan B". He calls in three more dealers, for their opinions.
  • Kino was attacked, and Juana nurses him. They bond together.
  • The other dealers say the same thing, confirming the pearl's bad value. A pearl that glorious is too good to be true it seems. Kino is enraged, yelling that they are all cheaters. He leaves with his pearl, saying he will sell it at the Capital.
  • Hmm...one of my clients likes these things. I'll give you 600? I want to sell it to them.
  • This pearl is worthless! I do not want it. Better pearls are made of paste, see how weird the texture is. It's trash.
  • In a sour mood, Kino returns home. He sits down and broods. His older brother provides some comfort and wisdom. But it is inevitable, that Kino will have to go to the capital and sell the pearl. But there are dangers everywhere.
  • We have faced cheating our whole life... but fine. I worry for you Kino. The Capital is a foreign area. Be careful! Go with God.
  • Someone from outside has hurt Kino! Juana is scared as she nurses her husband back to health. Juana says they should get rid of the pearl, it brings bad things. Kino refuses and insists they will get good money, he will not back down! Juana decides to travel with him.
  • No! I will fight, I will win. We will have our good fortune. I am a man. We won't be cheated. We will travel to the Capital. Believe me, I am a man.
