  • Hello, my name is Ezra Chua, and today we're going to practice tennis since there's an upcoming league at LSGH and I've been asked to play.
  • Let's put a little lesson in our practice and it is called the "Physics Game"

  • Newton's First Law asserts that an object keeps at rest and an object in motion retains its velocity until it is subjected to an unbalanced force. In this case, the tennis ball remains at rest, which is referred to as inertia. When a thing remains still, it is said to have inertia.

  • What I just did is referred to as the law of inertia. The ball is motionless in this scenario until the tennis player smashes it. The imbalanced force acting on the ball is me which is the tennis player.
  • During racquet contact, the only factors acting on the ball are gravity and the applied force from the racquet. As we can see, there is no horizontal force pushing back against applied force, therefore it accelerates forward.
  • Because air resistance was small when the ball was in the air, only one force acting on it was gravity. Nothing else can impart a force to the ball since no other thing is touching it.
