  • In The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is mankind is it's own worst enemy. On page 637, Goodman's car starts up on it's own and everyone begins to crowd around him. they start a huge commotion , accusing him of being the monster and turning everything in sight off. he starts trying to explain himself but everyone still insists and yells that "he's the monster". This shows that mankind is its own worst enemy because even when he was trying to tell the people to back off, they didn't and kept accusing him and each other. Also, on page 677, Don Martin tells everyone that Steve's wife talked to him saying that she was sad because Steve never just sits down and talks to her. She states that he is always working on some radio set and never pays attention to her. Charlie then asks him what kind of "radio set" he's working on and why he's never talked about it. Steve proceeds to ask Charlie why he's being "so dense". This is another way of showing the theme because instead of trying to calm each other down, the men just got even more suspicious of each other to the point one of their wives had to interfere. My last example is after Charlie accidentally shoots Pete Van Horn and his house lights turn on, when everyone chases him and he gets hurt by the crowd throwing rocks at him. he then says he knows who the monster is, and everyone continues to shout, accuse, and argue. This part in the teleplay/episode also shows the theme well because Charlie just shot the figure, killing Pete and because of that, the rest of the citizens threw rocks at Charlie until he got hurt. In conclusion, the main theme for this teleplay is that mankind is it's own worst enemy.
