In Lamb to the Slaughter, Mary Maloney is introduced as a loving and caring housewife. She is six months pregnant, waiting for her husband, Patrick Maloney, to come home from work. While she waits for him in the living room, she decides to sew to help pass the time. She anxiously stares at the clock until she hears footsteps coming towards her.
The story then proceeds to Patrick sitting Mary down to tell her he is leaving her. After hearing this, Mary stood up, having nothing to say, and went to prepare supper. Mary looked in the freezer and found a leg of lamb, and as she passed by the living room, she saw Patrick looking out the window. She went up to him and hit him with it behind his head. Patrick was now dead on the living room floor.
So I've killed him.
At the end of the story, Mary suggests that everyone help themselves to a glass of whiskey for their hard work. The police officers were hesitant at first but eventually took a sip. She then insists that they eat the lamb she prepared in the oven. The police officers agreed to eat the lamb since Mary wanted them to. This was all a part of Mary's plan to get rid of the murder weapon, the leg of lamb.
Give me some more.
Please eat it.
