  • THE STUDENT'S GUIDE TO SPACE- VOL I:An old fable
  • Space! The final frontier. The lockdown sucks, but atleast I could stargaze! I wonder how astronomy was in ancient times....
  • Space has fascinated humankind for centuries. From the first hominid to the modern humans, everyone has looked up in the night sky and wondered what was going on.
  • What is that?!It looks like a huge ball of fire!
  • Ancient people came up with crazy explanations of astronomical phenomena. The Chinese thought solar eclipses were caused by a giant dragon, while Indians believed the demons Rahu and Ketu were responsible.
  • The dragon will come soon!
  • Don't you mean Rahu and Ketu?
  • People who "predicted" astronomical events and understood what the sky was"saying" held positions of power. Priests, priestesses, soothsayers and members of the 'occult' came to be known as 'Kingmakers' since they could make or break dynasties.
  • Not now. The stars are not aligned.
  • Is the time favourable for war?
  • The stories our ancestors came up with may sound crazy today but the math behind them was correct. Eclipses, new moons, full moons and other events could be predicted many years in advance and the path of the stars could be drawn out.
  • These constellations appear only at certain seasons. Could there be a pattern behind it all? Hm...
  • We have come a long way since then. Various theories have been propounded and then discarded. That does not mean that they have been useless. Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to come to the conclusions we have today. What’s to say that today’s theories are even correct? Maybe our descendants would come up with new ones and deem ours as ‘useless’.
