- These workers work long hours for little wages. This has caused a stir in the office, with workers wondering how they can make their concerns known to the management and secure better conditions.
- Outside the Building

- The workers have been alerted to the representative of their union. This is known as the shop steward and has the role of representing the workers in grievances, disputes, and disciplinary hearings with management. the shop steward is an excellent communicator

- The workers have the option of striking as stipulated in the Labor relations act which protects their rights. The shop steward has the role of organizing strike ballots to direct these efforts to improve working conditions.

- The shop steward must obtain mandates from the trade union members so that their concerns for negotiations are clear. The shop steward must be very knowledgeable in the law, especially the labour relations act. Section 14 of the LRA gives shop stewards the important responsibility of making sure management adheres to the LRA and negotiation agreements.
- Why are you striking, the is lots of work needed to be done!
- The shop stewards must organize meetings of the trade union.The shop steward acts as a link between the higher level of the union leadership and the employees on the ground. Therefore the shop stewards must inform workers of union plans and policies and inform the leadership of the concerns of workers.
- I'm sorry everything will be done to increase their wages
- Strikes organized by the unions under the stewardship of the shop steward must confirm to LRA regulations. This prevents direct conflict and even violence which has occurred in strikes before e.g Marikana. The right to strike is directly enshrined in the constitution specifically the Bill of rights.
