The Missouri Compromise was a big deal in American history, especially when it came to the issue of slavery. It all started in 1819 when Missouri wanted to join the United States as a state that allowed slavery. This caused a lot of arguments in Congress because, at the time, there was a balance between free states and slave states . If Missouri joined as a slave state, it would upset that balance.
To solve the problem, Congress came up with a compromise in 1820. They decided that Missouri could join as a slave state, but at the same time, Maine would join as a free state. This way, the balance between free and slave states stayed equal. They also made a rule that slavery would not be allowed in any new territories or states north of a certain line, called the 36°30′ parallel, except for Missouri.
