  • New York City, 1969
  • TheStonewall Inn
  • The NYC police raid the Stonewall Inn gay club: arresting and brutalizing the patrons and employees. Lesbian activist and Stonewall Inn patron, Stormé DeLarverie, was particularly roughed up; hit in the head with a baton and detained with painfully tight handcuffs.
  • Being taken outside of the Inn and knocked around by police, Stormé DeLarverie did everything she could to resist arrest and fight back; landing the first punch against an officer and famously shouting at the gathering crowd, "Why don't you do something?!"
  • WHY DON'T YOU DO SOMETHING?!
  • Encouraged by Delarverie, the crowd grew angry and began to take action. They yelled chants, threw bottles and pennies, and slashed the tires of police cars; rebelling against the polices' homophobic abuse of power in any way they could.
  • WE SHALL OVERCOME!
  • PIGS!
  • GAY POWER!
  • As the mob grows, the police withdraw and barricade themselves inside the Inn. Outside, the rioters break down doors, continue hurling bottles and other objects, and make firebombs, throwing them inside the demolished building at the police.
  • Reinforcements were called and NYC's riot team arrived. They put out the fire and then began to beat and teargas the crowd of 400+ rioters until it disbanded. Despite the NYPD's effort, the Stonewall Riots worked to only strengthen the country's LGBTQ community; leading to the first Gay Pride parade being thrown on it's one year anniversary, and the creation of many pro-LGBTQ organizations.
