Slaves in Haiti found out about the revolution, which led to them fighting for their own rights. Toussaint joined the fight as general early on.

1793: Toussaint agreed to help the French army eject the British and Spanish, and proved himself to be a brilliant general by winning 7 fights in 7 days. Was then known as a de facto governor of Haiti.
1798: Toussaint L'Ouverture becomes leader of the revolution and successfully fought the French as well as invading the Spanish and British.
1803: Napoleon was ready to get rid of Haiti, so he made a deal with Toussaint stating that he recognized Haiti as independant if Toussaint agreed to step down from public life.

A few months after the agreement, the French invited Toussaint to come to a negotiating meeting. When he got there, they arrested him and he died in prison.
