  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy.
  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. For example, Les Goodman's car starts on by its own (after the power goes out). His neighbors/friends start blaming him right away, not considering this could have been a freak accident or a coincidence (pg. 75). This supports the theme by stating how the neighbors started blaming Les and telling him things. Another reason, Charlie gets scared of the dark figure that is coming towards him. Without confirming who or what it is, he shoots it. When he gets close he finds out that it is his neighbor (Pete Van Horn)....he just ruined his neighbor's life (pg. 82). This supports the theme by Charlie not having any patiene and seeing who/what it was, then he is the one who deserves all of the consequences. The last reason is at the end (after Steve, Charlie, Les, and Tommy have been blamed) they each start arguing with each other for dumb reasons about who is related to, or knows something about the meteor with each other because they have no one else to blame. They have just ruined all of the friendship (pg. 85) . This supports the theme because know they are hust blaming each other for anything and not have the common decency to state the evidnce in why they think that. In conclusion, these are the reasons why, mankind is its own worst enemy is the perfect theme for this teleplay.
