- In the beginning, there was Te Kore, The nothing. From Te Kore came Te Po, The night. There were many nights, the last nights joined with Space and there became two beings into thoughts. There was darkness all around.
- These two thoughts were called Rangi, the Sky Father and Papa, the Earth Mother. They held each other so tight that they refused to let go of each other. There was no light on earth as Rangi and Papa's tight embrace prevented it. There was not even enough room for time to slip between them.
- Initially, earth and sky joined together and their six children were born. Tane Mahuta - God of the forests, Tawhirimatea - God of the weather, Haumiatiketike - God of wild food, Rongomatane - God of peace, Tangaroa - God of the sea and Ruamoko - God of earthquakes. They were all trapped between their parents and could hardly move. The children talked about what they should do.
- After much discussion, the brothers finally agreed to separate thier parents. It was Tame that used all his strength to force his parents apart. The pair did not want to be separated and the tears of Ranginui came down from the sky where he now remains. Rangi grieved for Papa and as a result, she was faced down so she wouldn't see Rangi's sadness.
- As time passed, the brothers split up but worked together to create the landscape we know so well today. All of the children had different abilities that were put to use after their parents were separated each becoming guardians of particular domains.
- The separation of Papatuanuku and Ranginui resulted in the beautiful world we live in today.
