Stumbling Across Islam and Hinduism

By Audrey Pearce

Hi, my name is Omar. It's nice to meet you! What is your name?

Hello Omar, my name is Anya! I was just wondering what you were doing on the ground?

I have finished my prayer.

Hmm... What is he doing?

Omar finishes his noon prayer, Dhuhr, during recess at school when Anya suddenly approaches him.

Anya approaches Omar and they have a conversation. She asks a question which she was interested about because she was not used to seeing someone praying in public before.

I was praying. It is something that we do in my religion Islam 5 times a day. Because it is noon, I did my second prayer called Dhuhr.

Where do you pray? In my religion we pray as a group or alone. We go to worship at the Mosque and we face Mecca when we pray. Also, our prayer times are at sunrise, noon, afternoon, sunset, and night. It all depends on where the sun is, though.

I pray in a Temple, that is the place of worship in Hinduism which is called Mandir. We also pray at home too!

Omar and Anya start talking to each other to learn more about their religions. Omar is Islamic and Anya is a Hindu. They discuss how many times they pray as well as their places of worship.

That is so interesting! I did not know that other religions pray 5 times a day. I am a Hindu and we pray 3 times a day!

Recess comes to an end and Anya invites Omar over for dinner. In Islam, Ramadan is taking place so Omar is fasting. He agrees to come over but will not be eating with them.

RECESS BELL RINGS

Recess is over, we better get back to class. I was wondering if you wanted to come over to my house for dinner and we can talk more. This is so interesting and I'd love to get to know your religion!

I am sorry, I didn't know that. Well, I will see you after school. Goodbye!

Goodbye Anya, it was nice meeting you!

I cannot join you for dinner because I am fasting in Ramadan so I am not allowed to eat with you. We fast during the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. We do this to build out connection with God stronger, to discipline ourselves, and to obey God.

Does he believe in the same God's that I do?

What are his traditions at home? What is his language and does he speak it at home with family?

When is he allowed to eat during Ramadan? Does he have to eat specific foods?

Anya gets on the school bus and goes home. She is very excited and this about everything that she wants to ask Omar.
