- Charlie Gordon who is 37 years old, was chosen by his teacher Ms. Kinnian and two doctors named Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur to participate in a experiment that would triple his current I.Q. of 68.
- FALLING ACTION
- Charlie is introduced to Algernon, a mouse that has already gotten this procedure and is asked to go through a series of tests, including a maze race against Algernon. Despite his eager to learn. Charlie starts getting frustrated by his lack of ability to beat a mouse.
- FALLING ACTION
- After Charlie's surgery was over, his knowledge began gradually increasing day by day. And in no time, he had surpassed both doctors in intelligence. Regardless this remarkable change, Charlie soon finds out his "friends" from the bakery have been treating him poorly before his operation.
- RESOLUTION
- Charlie is devastated by the fact that his "friends" were using him as their puppet and refused to see anyone nor visit his doctors. He locks himself inside his apartment until Ms. Kinnian visits him and convinces him to come back.
- When Charlie comes back, him and the doctors start to notice Algernon having signs of aggression. He has started to become less co-operative and refuses to run the maze. Regardless all the research, Charlie finds it hard to accept that he will also have these symptoms and therefore return to his I.Q. of 68. Algernon dies about 2 weeks later.
- About a month later, his intelligence has taken a huge dive and he has returned to the "old" Charlie. He decides to move to New York for good in order to stop anything like this operation to happen again and since he doesn't want Ms. Kinnian to feel bad. In the end, his last request for her was to place flowers on Algernon's grave.
