  • Long ago, people used things like: compasses, quadrants, maps, hourglasses, astrolabes, sextants, cross staff and back staff, telescopes, lead lines, and ships to navigate.
  • Astrolabes were used for latitude finding.
  • The compass was used to tell direction. It works by detecting the earths magnetic fields.
  • A binnacle is the housing for a ships compass. Can u imagine what a binnacle looks like?
  • The quadrant allows the user to determine their latitude by measuring the altitude of a heavenly body.
  • Sextants were used for determining the angle between the horizon and a celestial body like the sun, moon or stars.
  • Cross staff and back staff were mainly used for finding the latitude by measuring the altitude of the polar star and of the sun.
  • The telescope was used to form magnified images of objects in the distance.
  • Maps are used for a lot of things but to sum it up, maps present information about the world in a simple visual way.
  • A wheel map is a map made in the shape of a disk with Jerusalem usually at the center.
  • Ptolemy map is a map of the world know to Greco-Roman society in the 2nd century.
  • Portolan charts were navigational maps designed to help sailors get safely to and from places
  • Hourglasses were used to measure the time at sea and lead lines were used to measure the depth of the water and surroundings.
