Functionalism is the work of William James, an American philosopher and psychologist who was heavily influenced by the Charles Darwin's evolutionary theory.
James wanted to understand human behavior in terms of it's function in people's lives; if a particular behavior was detrimental or beneficial to a person and how a person's behavior was modified over the years of human existence.
In the book titled, Principles of Psychology, published in 1890, James postulated that, "consciousness is ongoing and continuous. " Therefore, it serves to help human adapt to their environments which allows humans choice and to have responsibility over those choices. (Baker n.d.)

Associated with Functionalism, is the term evolutionary psychology which looks at the behavioral and personality trait and how these traits can improve fitness. Evolutionary psychology is an important theory because it gives a logical explanation as to why people have so many psychological characteristics.
Evolutionary psychology is a. "branch of psychology that applies the Darwinian theory of natural selection to human and animal behavior." (Spielman, n.d.)
Spielman et. al (n.d.) explained that a limitation with evolutionary theory is that it is difficult to predict what psychological traits a person could have since we are unable to determine which psychological traits our ancestors did or did not have.
Fitness refers to, "the extent to which having a given characteristic helps an individual organism survive and reproduce at a higher rate than other members of the species who do not have the characteristic," (Spielman, n.d.) referring to the fact that people with higher fitness would be more successful in passing on their genes
