  • Woah! Crystal where are we?
  • John, we're in the Sahara Desert. The Sahara Desert is a very hot and arid area located in northern Africa. In fact, the Sahara is so dry that it only receives around 0 to 3 inches of rainfall per year, which makes water highly scarce. Due to these inadequate conditions, the number of people living here is extremely low. Settlement in the desert is only possible in those areas where access to water is available, for example near the Nile or Niger River or within an oasis. Traveling being hard due to several environmental challenges, transportation is possible by camel caravans. Addditionally, most economic activity in the area is confined to herding and farming.

  • Rainforest
  • Now where are we Crystal? This place looks totally different than the other one.
  • John our ventures have now taken us to Africa's tropical rainforest. This rainforest is a place located in central Africa and experiences high temperatures and humidity, and contains plenty of water, streams, and vegetation. This makes the area suitable for habitation since it can provide food , medicines, and housing for millions of inhabitants. The large amount of wood here has made the cutting down of trees and selling them in urban areas via building of roads a profitable business. However, this excessive logging has triggered the issue of deforestation. If not done anything about the tropical rainforests of Africa could very well disappear in the next hundred years, leading to the extinction of thousands plant and animal species.

  • Savanna
  • Now crystal, what is this place? It has some trees kinda like the rainforest, however it's also scorching hot and pretty dry like Sahara Desert.
  • Great observation John. This place is called the Savanna. The African Savanna is the largest tropical grassland of Africa, and it has hot weather and seasons of wet and dry weather. It has adequate seasonal rains that can allow for agricultural activities to be conducted here, which is why this area is the most densely populated part of Africa. It has millions of people settled in this area as herders and farmers, and the large area makes for an ecotourism and agricultural area. However, the abundance of people in the Savanna and tourism raises the risk of overgrazing and pouching, creating environmental issues.
