  • 3 The Force of Destiny
  • 9 Esme
  • 13 Vernal Conclave
  • In this chapter, Citra and Rowan meet for the first time. In this exact scene, Scythe Faraday tells Rowan and Citra that they will be his apprentices and will compete for the ring. This is important to the novel because being Scythe Faraday's apprentices changes both of their lives forever.
  • 17 The Seventh Commandment
  • In this chapter, the reader sees the elegy of scythes for the second time. In this scene, Scythe Goddard is telling Esme to not worry because the gleaning is over and she is the last survivor. This is important because Esme is later revealed to be the High Blade's daughter, who Goddard uses Esme to blackmail to get what he wants in the Scythedom.
  • 36 The Thirteenth kill
  • In this chapter, Rowan and Citra attend the Vernal Conclave. In this scene, Scythe Rand makes the suggestion that the winner glean the other and the High Blade agreed. This is important to the novel because it caused tension between Rowan and Citra and it caused Scythe Faraday to self glean to spare them.
  • 39 Winter Conclave
  • In this chapter, Citra and Rowan are taken to High Blade Xenocrates' cabin. In this chapter, Rowan and Citra find out that Scythe Faraday self gleaned and they will be taken on by new Scythes, Curie and Goddard. This is important to the novel because it separates Rowan and Citra, and it puts them under two very different teachers.
  • In this chapter, Goddard is finishing his gleaning at a Tonist chapel. In the scene before this, (because I won't portray it) Goddard tells Rowan to glean the last tonist. However, Rowan kills Goddard instead, and when Rand and Chomsky come in the room, he kills them too, then he burns the building down so their bodies can't be revived. This is important to the novel because it proves what Goddard tells Rowan, he is good at killing and it is the point of no return for Rowan.
  • In this chapter, Citra is ordained as a Scythe. She is supposed to glean Rowan but she punches him first with the hand that her ring is on which gives him immunity. This is important to the novel because Rowan ends up surviving and escaping.
