  • Mary Shelley (1797-1851) is mostly known as the writer of the very first science fiction novel, Frankenstein. Published in 1818, the story of how the now famous monster tale came to be was actually on accident! One evening while stuck inside from bad weather, the four adults decided to tell each other stories to help pass the time. It is famously noted that Frankenstein and the Vampyre were invented on this same night.
  • The story goes that the men in the room took their turns trying to out do one another; and yet when it was Mary's turn, everyone soon became entranced and horrified by her tale of the reanimated creature. She was encouraged to write down the story for publication as it was unlike anything the men had ever considered or read before.
  • While it was believed that her career as a writer was largely driven toward assisting in the publishing of her husband's works, Mary Shelley had a respected and prominent writing career that published a wide range of novels and journals. It wasn't until after her death that research revealed her private journals proved just how intelligent and forward thinking she was for the time period. This was shown in her political beliefs that would have been radical at the time that were almost opposite of her husband's point of view that she still assisted in publishing. She passed away at age 53.Sources: https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/frankenstein-published#:~:text=Mary%20Shelley%20created%20the%20story,telling%20and%20writing%20ghost%20stories.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Shelley
