Storyboard Text

  • Nope, let's go outside and I'll show you.
  • This eraser has gravitational energy. It used to have potential energy, until I held it up above the ground.
  • Did the potential energy disappear?
  • Energy does not disappear, rather it is transformed into a different type of energy, or transferred to a different object, for example, when I picked it up, I threw it up and caught it. some of that energy was then transferred to my hand, so my hand has some of that energy.
  • The eraser had potential energy on the table, after I picked it up, it was transformed into gravitational energy. The energy was not lost, rather turned into a different type.
  • As I throw it, that GE is turned into kinetic energy, the energy comes from my hand, when I threw it. So that energy was transferred from my hand to the eraser.
  • Let's say I were to throw this eraser...
  • As it flies through the air, some of that energy is transferred to the surrounding air molecules, and is then used for heat energy.
  • When it hit your head, notice how it got squished down a bit. This deformation, is the result of KE turning into elastic energy, allowing it to stretch as it hit your head. It was compressing as it hit your head because of its elasticity.
  • I threw it at you so I could use you for an example...
  • From it hitting your head, and then the ground, some energy from the eraser was transferred to both of you. That's why the eraser was slowed down after hitting you, and stopped after hitting the ground. It also slowly decompressed after it hit the ground.
  • OW!
  • You were annoying me, I had to.
  • ...also its funny to throw things at you.
