Finally school is over! I'm so exited to spend my vacation with my best friend at the beach
This is so unfair !
Mai, you're going to Vietnam with Bà, your grandmother, to try to find Ông, your grandfather, who disappeared during the Vietnam war.
In Vietnam Mai meets Ùt and Anh Minh. Together with Ùt they make an excuse to go to Hanoi to find the detective and the guard who last saw Ông during the war to ask about Ông's message, because they found an address in the detective's notebook

They finally discover Ông's message which was carved on the rocks of the cave where him and the guard constructed a tunnel. Bà finally knows what happened to Ong. Mai's dad joins them because he usually comes to Vietnam in summer to help sick children because he's a doctor.
After finding Ông's message, they all come back to the village where Mai and Bà are staying at Ông's brother's house and organise a ceremony for Ông.
Mai now realises that Vietnam isn't so terrible and that she has discovered so many new things. So instead of leaving, she is staying a little longer with Ùt and Anh Minh.
