  • The Prison Reform took place in 1841.
  • This took place when a women that was working as a Sunday school teacher in a jail and seen the conditions that it was in.
  • There had been a need for this reform because the conditions that they had the prisoners in was not a good thing especially for the mentally ill. People that where in debt with the banks would also be put in jail for a long period of time for a minor offence.
  • Conditions that the prisoners had been living in are dirty cells, too many people in one cell, for the mentally ill some where bound to chains and locked in cages, another thing is that all of the prisoners could have been beaten.
  • The movement had led to many states making more hospitals and asylums for the mentally ill to be treated properly in. It also led to debtors no longer being put in prison.
  • It had a huge impact on how the prisons and states would be handling these situations as well as proving that reformers could be able make significant changes in society.
  • When she seen the way that they were being treated she had wanted to know if it was like that everywhere. She had seen that in most places it was the same thing going on and she had been saying that the mentally ill need to be treated not punished.
  • The reformer for the prison reform was Dorothea Dix. She was born in Boston, and she had gotten involved with the jail because she had been the women that was teaching Sunday school at the jail when she had seen the conditions that led her to start the movement.
  • No problem, so what are you thinking about putting in the report?Personally I think that is a great idea. Others might not think the same, but other than that it would be a great thing to add to it.
  • Thank you for meeting with me to discus the report about the jails.I am thinking that I will describe the things that I seen in detail as well as so ideas of what to do about it. What do you think bout that?
